Dear Fellow Volcanoes, I continue to be inspired by Andri Snær Magnason whose book On Time and Water I discussed in this newsletter last month. In Making the Invisible Visible- Seeing Ourselves as Volcanoes I talked about noticing that we are indeed erupting volcanoes. If that metaphor resonated with you, I invite to read the latest article by the same author published in the Atlantic this week. The article is titled The Gods Were Right:

Earth’s volcanoes—both on land and underwater—are estimated to release, on average, about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide a year; humanity releases almost 37 billion. The fire we burn is almost 200 times greater than that produced by all the volcanic activity on Earth. Yet we go through our day without actually seeing fire or smoke….
… We are the eruption, but we don't see the flames when we look in the mirror. Everything is so well designed, so invisible. If the cars on our highways displayed their fires on the outside, the conflagration we kindle in order to get to work would be evident. If fire were to rise from the bodies of cars, we could see the mighty lava flow that this frenzy of traffic constitutes. We can see forest fires and burning high-rises…
… We do not perceive our everyday life as a disaster. But the eruption is us—our lives, our daily existence.

Fundraising for Walk4Education

During the week of June 21st 2021, Alena, my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage guide, and her friend Chris in England will be walking on different sides of the globe to raise money for young people’s education in Ecuador. Alena will walk the Kohechi route of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Japan, an over 40 miles 4-day challenge. She has chosen to walk the Kohechi route of Kumano Kodo which leads through forests and mountains from the Shingon Buddhist monastery of Koya-san in the North of the Kii Peninsula to the Kumano San-zan, the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano (Shinto shrines) in the South. (In the Fall, for the Women’s Pilgrimage, we will walk the Nakahechi route). At the same time, Chris in the U.K. will take the 40 miles 4-day Pilgrims’ Way from Rochester to Canterbury through the Kent countryside. Please support their walk to benefit The Condor Trust for Education. The Condor Trust for Education enables young people from low income families in Ecuador to attend secondary school and higher education, so they can find a job and break the cycle of poverty into which they were born. |
